Stories of hope

Patches: Blessed at the last moment!

Patches Rich

After battling heart disease for 13 years, I was given the chance in a lifetime by my donor.

I was 35 years old, pregnant with my 5th pregnancy, a rainbow baby. I had 2 previous miscarriages and this last pregnancy really took a toll on my heart. I was diagnosed with post-partum cardiomyopathy, and my heart started to fail, my condition worsening as the years went by.

I was accepted to be a candidate for heart transplant in January of 2023. Then by November 10th I was placed as a status 4 on the transplant list.

I stayed in ICU for approximately 6 months of 2023. Finally by December 9th my heart function dropped, requiring an implanted heart pump. As a result, my status went to a 2. Within 11 hours my prayers were answered; I received my first heart offer. I gladly accepted.

I received my donor heart, a gift of life, on December 10th, 2023. I was elated and knew without a doubt this was the perfect heart for me. By December 23rd I was able to go home and spend Christmas with my youngest child—a true Christmas blessing. Now, I’m doing great and spending great quality time with my family and loved ones. Thank you UNOS for helping me and others alike in finding their perfect match to help us (donor recipients) and our families continue to grow longer and stronger! #heartwarrior
