Stories of hope

Barbara Tennyson-Crawford: I am a wonder child

Transplant recipient, Barbara

I was diabetic for only 15 years when I developed kidney failure. I did not take care of myself; denial ran through me as fast as it does in Africa. Luckily, I was able to get a pancreas along with a kidney. I tried peritoneal dialysis first, but it became septic and almost died, which took me off the list. Switching over to hemodialysis changed the story. I got healthier and soon got the call. My husband and I drove to the clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, where the excellent team took care of me. I am 12 years post-surgery now. With complications, I will keep fighting for my life and everyone else who goes through this to help them learn to have a healthier life.
